Recently
there was a scandal in Taiwan involving a celebrity, a helicopter and an army
General. What is exactly is a scandal? And what is the difference between a
scandal, a rumor and gossip? Let’s find out.
A
scandal is a story that comes out
about a person or an organization that has done something wrong. The details in
the story may or may not be true. Usually a scandal is about celebrities or
politicians or big companies and the news is in the newspaper, magazines and
TV. A scandal is usually something that is meant to be a secret, but the secret
is exposed.
Example: American president Bill Clinton is well known
for his political sex scandal in 1998 known as the Lewinsky Scandal.
A
rumor is a story that passes from
person to person but the accuracy of the information is not always accurate and
sometimes the truth is never found known. A rumor could be amongst your
classmates or it could be a global issue.
Example: I heard a rumor that
Jenny is secretly dating Peter, but she hasn’t broken up with David yet.
Gossip is when we talk about
other people without them knowing. In other words, it’s talking behind someone
else’s back. Unfortunately we are all guilty of this from time to time. Gossip
is usually about someone’s personal or private life, which can include rumors
and scandals. Some newspapers and magazines have a gossip column to discuss the
lives of celebrities.
Example: I stopped being
friends with Sally and Betty because all they ever do is gossip about our
classmates.

The Origin
The origin of
April Fools Day is not clear. In fact, there are quite a few theories on how it
started. There is evidence that it has been happening in Northern Europe since
the 1500s, however it is very vague and ambiguous. For certain, in 1708 a man
wrote to a the Apollo Magazine in
England asking how the tradition started, and people have been asking ever
since.
One theory is
that the French calendar changed in 1564, moving the start of the year from the
end of March to the beginning of January. If anyone failed to remember this and
celebrated New Years in the last week of March (until April 1st) had jokes
played on them.
Another theory
is from England where in the 13th century there was a law that any road the
king put foot on would become public property. One town, called Gotham, did not
want to lose their main road (for toll reasons I guess), so when the king
announced he was going to visit it their town they refused him entry. When the
king heard this, he sent soldiers to the town. But when the soldiers arrived
they found the town full of lunatics doing foolish activities, such as trying
to drown fish, or catch birds in cages that had no roof. Their foolery was all an act, of course, but
when the king heard this he fell for it and declared the town too foolish to
punish. Ever since, according to legend, April Fools Day commemorates their
trickery.
Blue Can Warning, April 1, 1996
Virgin Cola
announced that in the interest of consumer safety it had integrated a new
technology into its cans. When the cola passed its sell-by date, the liquid
would react with the metal in the can, turning the can bright blue. Virgin
warned that consumers should therefore avoid purchasing all blue cans.
Coincidentally, Pepsi had recently unveiled its newly designed cans which were
bright blue.
Big Ben Goes Digital, April 1, 1980
The BBC reported
that Big Ben was going to be given a digital makeover. The news elicited a huge
response from listeners shocked and angry about the change. “Surprisingly, few
people thought it was funny,” admitted Tony Lightley. The same news report also
claimed that the clock hands would be given away to the first four listeners to
contact the station. One Japanese sailor in the mid-Atlantic immediately
radioed in, hoping to be among the lucky callers.

How
to meet people in bars and clubs
There
are several ways to meet people in bars and clubs. Everyone has their own
method and style. Some guys like to ask a girl if they can buy her a drink.
Other guys might try some kind of pick up line. Girls might flirt with boys to
get their attention. Other girls and guys might try to make eye contact before
talking to them. Whatever you do, whether you’re a boy or a girl, you must be
nice, be polite, don’t be creepy and try to be fun, approachable and
interesting. If you can do this you will have no problem meeting people.
Can I
buy you a drink
– a common question for guys to ask girls (although girls can ask guys). It is
considered a polite thing to do if you’ve just met someone. If the girl says ‘no’
do not be offended.
Pick up
line
– Something a guy says to a girl (or a girl says to a guy) to start a
conversation. Like an ice-breaker. Pick up lines can sound cheesy, but they
generally work if they’re polite and sincere.
Flirt – To act interested
in someone, either through words or body language, or both!
Eye
contact
– Catching someone’s eye to let them know you have noticed them. This can be
useful in a crowded place where talking is not easy. But don’t stare at
someone! That would be creepy.
So,
you’ve met someone in the bar and they’ve agreed to let you buy them a drink.
What drinks are available? It is a bar, so they’ll be alcoholic drinks. Here
are some to choose from:
若是你想請他喝酒的人答應讓你請客了,有什麼酒精類飲品可以選擇呢?下列提供你選擇。
Beer
– always a simple choice. Usually guys will be happy with this.
Cocktail
– a colorful, fruity drink, usually with some fruit or an umbrella in it. Girls
generally go for cocktails. Some popular cocktails are Blue Hawaiian, Pink
Lady, Cosmopolitan, Margarita, Daiquiri, Mai Tai and Long Island Iced Tea.
Blue Hawaiian, Pink Lady, Cosmopolitan, Margarita, Daiquiri, Mai Tai and Long Island Iced Tea.
Mixer
drinks – The standard bar drinks such as vodka and coke; whiskey, lime and
water; gin and tonic; rum and coke. Most people enjoy these but be careful
because they can be strong!
Wine
– Red wine, white wine and Rosé. You’ll need to ask your friend which one they
prefer. Red wine is usually served room temperature while white wine and Rosé
are chilled.

Roll
one’s eyes at someone (action)
If
you roll your eyes at someone it means you are annoyed or bored with what that
person has said or done.
Example:
Kate was told to 'keep writing' by her boss and quickly turned
back to her job - but not before rolling her eyes in irritation.
Rolling
your eyes is considered rude to do, but people still do it, and often on
purpose, to let the other person know that they are being annoying or silly.
You may do this in front of friends and family, but it is not a good idea to do
in front of teachers, co-workers, and strangers.
Beer belly (n.)Used to describe the belly of a person, usually a man, who has a big belly, probably from drinking too much beer. This is a common phrase around the world because so many men drink beer. It’s not rude, just a little impolite if the person is a stranger, as they might be ashamed or embarrassed by their belly. Although, in some cultures some men are proud of their beer belly!
Washboard abs (n.)Used to describe the muscles of a person’s stomach, known as a 6-pack, especially if they are very impressive and do not have any fat on them. Both men and women can be described as having washboard abs. It is a compliment to give someone. The word ‘washboard’ comes from a flat board used for washing clothes in the old days. The shape of the stomach muscles represents this shape. Abs (abdominal) are the name of the stomach muscles.
