Recently
there was a scandal in Taiwan involving a celebrity, a helicopter and an army
General. What is exactly is a scandal? And what is the difference between a
scandal, a rumor and gossip? Let’s find out.
A
scandal is a story that comes out
about a person or an organization that has done something wrong. The details in
the story may or may not be true. Usually a scandal is about celebrities or
politicians or big companies and the news is in the newspaper, magazines and
TV. A scandal is usually something that is meant to be a secret, but the secret
is exposed.
Example: American president Bill Clinton is well known
for his political sex scandal in 1998 known as the Lewinsky Scandal.
A
rumor is a story that passes from
person to person but the accuracy of the information is not always accurate and
sometimes the truth is never found known. A rumor could be amongst your
classmates or it could be a global issue.
Example: I heard a rumor that
Jenny is secretly dating Peter, but she hasn’t broken up with David yet.
Gossip is when we talk about
other people without them knowing. In other words, it’s talking behind someone
else’s back. Unfortunately we are all guilty of this from time to time. Gossip
is usually about someone’s personal or private life, which can include rumors
and scandals. Some newspapers and magazines have a gossip column to discuss the
lives of celebrities.
Example: I stopped being
friends with Sally and Betty because all they ever do is gossip about our
classmates.
